Museums and Organisation Isle of Wight Map
North Isle of Wight
At the Isle of Wight POA Learning Centre we have a warm and inviting approach to learning and the centre is open and accessible to all.

POA Learning co-ordinates trade union education and lifelong learning opportunities for all Prison and Secure Hospital employees, members of associated unions, friends, family and local communities. This includes training and development for union reps as well as personal and career development courses ranging from Skills for Life through to professional qualifications and apprenticeships. We also offer Matrix© accredited Information and Careers guidance through our network of Union Learning Reps based in our National and Regional Learning centres.
Carisbrooke Castle
Sitting high and proud at the heart of the Isle of Wight, Carisbrooke Castle has been an artillery fortress, king's prison and a royal summer residence.
Today it’s the quintessential romantic castle, with lots to see and enjoy in the fresh open air. Experience far reaching panoramic views from high castle walls, or wander the moat to discover King Charles I’s bowling green. Enjoy the tranquil Princess Beatrice Garden, before meeting the famous Carisbrooke donkeys.
Osborne
Osborne is the palatial former holiday home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, located on the Isle of Wight. Relax in the open air as you wander rolling acres of the magnificent Osborne estate. Take in the riotous colours of the walled garden, or enjoy the peaceful shade of the woodland walk – be sure to keep an eye out for red squirrels. Visit Victoria and Albert’s bathing beach and admire their children’s play-cottage for an intimate glimpse of royal family life. Stroll through the garden terraces and take in the same stunning views across the Solent that once reminded Prince Albert of the Bay of Naples.
West Isle of Wight
Yarmouth Castle
Don’t miss the chance to explore the quirky seaside town of Yarmouth and its fascinating castle. Once one of Henry VIII’s most sophisticated coastal fortresses, today Yarmouth Castle provides one of the best picnic spots on the island. Enjoy the breathtaking view across the crystal waters of the Solent before stepping inside for an atmospheric recreation of how the castle was used in the 16th century. You can also explore an exhibition telling the story of the many shipwrecks that have occurred in the treacherous stretch of sea overlooked by the castle.
Dinosaur Expeditions is a Community Interest Company created by local fossil enthusiasts to help the local community and visitors to the Isle of Wight learn more about our unique fossil heritage and locally produced palaeoart.

In 2013 we set-up the Dinosaur Expeditions, Conservation and Palaeoart Centre at the site of the Dinosaur Farm Museum near Brighstone on the Isle of Wight. The centre houses displays of dinosaur fossils, palaeoart, childrens’ activities and a fossil giftshop.
Fossils are a rare finite natural resource that is gradually dwindling as coastal erosion continues to expose fossil-bearing layers.
Left uncollected, scientifically important fossils are destroyed by the sea. Every year we lose precious specimens to the elements, which could have been recovered, conserved and made available for public display and academic research.
The leading nature conservation charity in the two counties. We protect local wildlife and inspire people to love nature through our beautiful nature reserves and programme of events across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts working across the UK. With the invaluable support of volunteers and members we manage over 50 nature reserves. We also work with other organisations and landowners to protect and connect wildlife sites across the county and inspire local communities and young people to care for wildlife where they live.
Dimbola was the home of the celebrated Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. It is now a Museum and Gallery dedicated to her life and work, which also showcases contemporary exhibitions from photographers around the globe.
A visit to Dimbola can help explore topics from the history of portraiture, how art and photography have been inspired by poetry and literature and how artists and photographers engage with Art History.
Dimbola is also a special place and its atmosphere has inspired many.
Shipwreck Centre & Maritime Museum
The largest exhibition of its kind in the UK. Bursting with thousands of relics from shipwrecks and "Treasures from the Deep" including beautiful "Pieces of Eight", Spanish Gold, and items salvaged from galleons, steamships and wartime submarines.
Dinosaur Isle is an all-year-round facility, combining entertainment, education and enjoyment. Displays use clever lighting, artwork, sound, smells and animatronic technology to create an exciting experience.

The museum displays over 1000 of the best fossils from the collections, and the dedicated museum staff and volunteers have spent much time preparing the specimens for the new displays.
Our aim is to increase public awareness of the international importance of the Isle of Wight's diverse geology and palaeontology.
Wight Community Energy is a Community Benefit Society set up to deliver community-owned renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy supply projects.

The site will help the Isle of Wight meet its own renewable energy targets. The site has been carefully selected as a suitable location in the area for the following reasons:

-
The local grid network is one of the few places in the Isle of Wight with remaining grid capacity to accommodate significant renewable generation.
-
Solar irradiance – the light levels around Homestead are amongst the highest in the country.
-
The site is free from AONB, SSSI, National Park areas, flood risks, and is based within relatively flat land.
-
Visual impact – The hedges and tree lines surrounding the site provides a natural barrier that screens the nearby residents and community. The presence of the solar park will not be prominent within the wider landscape.
GREEN SPACE
RESEARCH PROJECT
The aim of our research is to reconnect humans with nature.
Studies have shown that spending time in natural spaces is good for our physical and mental well being. We also know that our wildlife is in trouble and our efforts are needed to increase biodiversity and provide resource for wildlife.
Guest Speaker:
Aonghas von Rycker
Astrophysicist
Creator of Memosky®
We are delighted to welcome Aonghas as our second extraordinary Guest Speaker! Aonghas was born in France and has Anglo-Saxon origins and has recently relocated to the Isle of Wight. Curious about everything and passionate about life, he never stopped studying various fields such as mathematics, theology and philosophy. He then headed for the stars and graduated in astronomy and astrophysics to specialize in neurophotonics (medical application).

Big Microplastic Survey
on Ryde beach
The Big Microplastic Survey is a global citizen science project that has been gathering microplastic data for the last 18 months.
It was set up with the intention of gathering data about micro and mesoplastics that are found on beaches around the world. The data will be used to evaluate the composition and distribution of the pieces of plastic that are found. The Big Microplastic Survey is open to anyone!
Ryde Beach Survey
The next survey we are planning is going to be on Ryde Pier on 20 March 2020. The plan is to make this a trip for UoP students but we are also hoping that individuals, schools, and groups from the island will join in. We are meeting at the benches outside the Ryde Pier Cafe for 10:45 am. All the sieves and equipment needed will be provided. For those coming across from Portsmouth, we will be meeting at the Whitelink Paasenger Ferry Terminal at Gunwharf to take the 10:15 am ferry across to Ryde, then we will be returning on the 15:47 pm ferry back to Portsmouth. However, participants are welcome to stay longer.
Admin
It is advised that participants bring warm waterproof clothes, some food and drink and hand sanitizer with them for this event.
